Growth problems

Our growth used to work and now it has stalled. Why?

When growth that used to work stalls, something changed in the market, the offer or the team, and nothing else moved with it. The channels keep running but the reason they worked has gone. The first job is to find when it changed, because the date usually names the cause. Track by Outfly starts from that date.

The signs

  • The same channels bring fewer customers than they did a year ago.
  • A competitor now appears in conversations it never used to.
  • The person who built the early growth has moved on.
  • Nobody can agree when the slowdown started.

Why it happens

Early growth often rests on something specific: a founder's network, one channel that was cheap, a message that was new. Markets move, channels get crowded and people leave. When that happens, doing more of what used to work produces less each month.

What to do first

  1. Plot your key numbers month by month for the last two years.
  2. Mark what changed in the same months: hires and departures, pricing, product, competitors, channel costs.
  3. Find the first month the trend turned. Look at what changed just before it.
  4. Talk to customers who joined before and after that date, and ask why they chose you.

From the research

In Outfly's Growth Gaps 2026 report, 47 percent of 227 established SMEs (all countries) had positioning rated generic or unclear, and 30 percent had a website rated dated or poor. AI-assessed, from Outfly's prospect list, September 2026.

When to bring in help

Bring in help when the change is clear but the fix needs a new proposition, new pages and new campaigns, which is more than the current team can take on while keeping the business running. Compare Track with hiring or book a call.
